Life’s great experiences can come unexpectedly. This was the case for our family’s best dining experience in the U.K.: The Captain’s Table at the Ship Inn in Stonehaven, Scotland. After touring Dunnottar Castle, our guide, Paul King, dropped us off for lunch at a little seaside pub that he had never tried. We had no idea what to expect. It was a tiny, clean place with several local residents sitting around. We ordered at the bar and got a table.
The atmosphere was relaxed. The patrons sipped ale, ate and laughed. Our son wanted to order an appetizer of steamed mussels as his meal. We did not think that it would be enough; so, he got the fish and chips. The table next to us was soon served the mussels, and it was a huge, heaping bowl that both looked and smelled delectable. We were disappointed until we received our food: 2 fish and chips and 1 macaroni and cheese. The beer- battered haddock was the best that we had in Britain. It was crispy on the outside, moist and flaky the inside, and enormous. Even the mashed peas were fresh and tasty.
The highlight was Elaine’s macaroni and cheese; another huge serving which we all sampled. It was simply the best macaroni that any of us have ever had: perfectly creamy with multiple cheese flavors intermingling and thin, crispy, bread crust topping; absolutely delicious.
We left completely charmed, satisfied, and with full bellies: the perfect meal during a wonderful day. Thank you Paul!
If you are ever in Scotland around Dunnottar Castle, you should absolutely take a small detour and eat at The Captain’s Table at the Ship Inn in Stonehaven. Try the macaroni and try the fish. Order the mussel appetizer also and let us know what we missed.
