I have yet to venture to many places and have never been overseas. There are so many beautiful places I want to see and many interesting cultures to explore. I have a long list of places I want to see, but I chose Great Britain as my first overseas destination for various reasons. These are my top 5 reasons for choosing it.
1)J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis–
These are my favorite authors and my thinking and imagination were shaped partially by these two authors that hailed from Great Britain. They are really my heroes in many ways and I want to see their old “stomping grounds” as it were. One such place is The Eagle and Child pub (commonly known as the Bird and Baby or simply just the Bird) in Oxford where Lewis and Tolkien met weekly with a group known as The Inklings. Another is The Kilns, which is C.S. Lewis’ former home in Oxford. There are places where they both took walks. Some of the sights inspired their writings. One vivid example is St. Edward’s Church in The Cotswolds which is believed to have inspired Tolkien’s Doors of Moria in The Lord of The Rings.
Most of my ancestors are from England, Ireland, and Scotland so I want to see where some of them lived before their journey to America. There is a town in Scotland that bears my maiden name; a castle that my mom has traced back to one side of my family. These are just a few of the things that make the U.K. a place that holds a special place for me.
For as long as I can remember there have been great British authors, actors, musicians, etc. I want to see where so many of these great people are from. To name just a few: the above-mentioned Lewis and Tolkien, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who wrote all of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Alfred Hitchcock, Ian McKellen and many more. I can’t wait to actually see Baker Street in London, St. Edwards Church in the Cotswolds, The Kilns, and other things that before I have only read about or seen in movies.
I have long seen pictures of the beautiful Cotswolds, the iconic Big Ben, the rolling hills of Scotland in pictures. I’m ready to see all of this up close and personal. I know that as great as photographs can be, they can’t really replace seeing these things for oneself. They say a photograph is worth a thousand words but seeing something is worth even more.
I have long admired and enjoyed the Great Britain Pavilion at Epcot with the Twinings Tea shop and the English gardens. While very charming and it appears The Imagineers at Disney have really replicated some things in Great Britain very well, I want to hear the beautiful accents while sipping tea with the locals. I can’t wait to see and hear what makes this region so unique and compelling for myself. I am tired of reading of others exploits and want to have my own adventures; just like Bilbo Baggins of The Hobbit!
To reiterate, there are many fascinating and beautiful places to travel. When considering where to travel for our first overseas trip many things were taken into consideration, but for us these were our top five. Which overseas destinations have you seen?
