Disney Castaway Cay 5K
The Disney Castaway Cay 5K run/walk takes place on every Disney Cruise out of Port Canaveral, Miami, and occasionally other ports on Disney’s own, private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. The words free and Disney are rarely heard in the same sentence, but both do apply to the Castaway Cay 5K. It is listed as a port excursion and you have to register for it, but there is no additional fee.
You disembark from the ship shortly after it has docked with several hundred other passengers. The Castaway Cay 5K starts in the “town.” Then, you proceed out to the airfield.
You next exit onto the bicycle loop. After completing the loop, you continue to the end of the airfield, turn around, and head back to the finish line (at the start). The route is pancake flat and aside from the start was never crowded .
While you do not see very much ocean or beach on the run, the Disney Castaway Cay 5K is still a scenic run with plenty of tropical flowers and palm trees to enjoy, along with a dash of Disney whimsy.
The Castaway Cay 5K is not really a race. It is not timed. The Cruise Staff Team made this clear, saying “If you ask me your time, I will tell you 10 minutes. My job is to make you smile, not to be honest.” As you can imagine, it is very laid back. There were some fast runners, many more joggers, and a lot of walkers. It is open to anyone over age 12.
Being free, the Castaway Cay 5K is devoid of bling except for the rubber Finishers Medal. Who cares though? Again, Disney and free go together only rarely and you get a beautiful overview of the island. You can buy a souvenir T-shirt if you wish at the gift shop.
We will always remember the Castaway Cay 5K as our son’s first 5K race. He had no training and insisted on running it in his crocs. He was able to complete it in 34 minutes, though. We were/are proud.
If you have a Disney Cruise Line vacation planned that will be stopping at Castaway Cay in the Bahamas, make sure to check the list of port excursions and register for the Castaway Cay 5K. It is a great way to tour the island, burn off some the dessert that you’ve eaten, and start your amazing day of fun on the beach; and, it’s free!
