(This is from the standpoint of our teenage son who likes to make occasional contributions)
For those of you who don’t know, Galavant is a musical-comedy show in a medieval setting. It debuted on ABC last year and I was instantly hooked. The second season is about to debut, so I thought it would be a good time to get you all caught up. Before you read this, first check and see if you can find the first season on your television (if you have an on demand feature this would be a good way to find it). If you can’t, than read on. Just know that I won’t hold back any spoilers.
The season starts off telling, no, singing to us about the man whom the show is named after: Galavant. He is the classic dashing hero and is deeply in love with a woman named Madelena. Their relationship is cut short however, when the (slightly) despicable King Richard comes to their village. He sees Madelena and has his guards kidnap her (it’s good to be the king.) Galavant then goes on an adventure to save Madelena from King Richard’s clutches. When Galavant gets there, Madelena rejects him for the money and power that would come with being queen and Galavant goes home heartbroken.
Many months later a princess comes from a kingdom called Valencia, which has recently been overthrown by none other than King Richard. The princess, whose name is Isabella, comes asking Galavant to help liberate her people. Galavant, who for the past many months has drowned his sorrows in mutton and beer, refuses her requests for help. Princess Isabella then lies and says that she knows Madelena eventually had second thoughts and wants Galavant back. This is enough for Galavant to want to help, so he, Isabella, and his trusty squire Sid set out for Valencia.
Once they arrive at the castle they walk into a trap and are captured by King Richard and his guards. King Richard reveals to Galavant that Isabella betrayed him and lied about Madelena and then takes them to prison. Eventually, Galavant realized that Madelena never loved him, and gives up on her.
Meanwhile, King Richard’s older brother comes to the castle, with plans to take it over. Richard and his brother decide that the title of King shall be decided in a duel. King Richard volunteers to duel for the crown, thinking that his brother, who is very old, would have to fight him. Instead, his brother chooses a champion to fight in his stead. The champion that he chooses is Richard’s best friend Garret. Seeing that he has no hope in the fight, and that he is sure to die, Richard decides to let Galavant out of prison. They devise a plan to kill Richard’s brother. They then launch into the season’s best song on their way to kill the brother https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-Uy3ctRpPE. They are eventually stopped, but Garett saves them and breaks them out of the kingdom. Garett then puts them on a boat from Valencia to King Richard’s kingdom, and heads back to the castle. On his way back to the castle, Garett saves Isabella, Sid, and their friends. Once all this is done, he comes back only to discover that Madelena is killing Richard’s brother. She then tosses Garrett the crown, signifying that he is king.
